Braces

Due to new technologies, patients have much more options when it comes to choosing braces. Today, there are many types of braces from metal to ceramic, from colored to tooth-colored ones. Instead of looking like a metal fence in your mouth, braces have become stylish. Schedule an appointment with our Santa Clarita dentist to learn about your options for braces by calling (661) 290-2825 today!

There are two principal types of braces: fixed and removable. Fixed braces consist of bracket and bands that are bonded to your teeth and metal wires to push your teeth in the right position. Removable braces are more popular with teenagers or those who have baby teeth left. They are usually used to change jaw growth and form an adequate bite. The average period of brace treatment is from two to three years.

You Need Braces if:

    • You have an excessive overbite or openbite

Overbite occurs when the upper jaw extends over the lower jaw. In case of openbite, the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap, causing serious chewing problems.

    • You have crowding of your upper or lower front teeth

Crowding happens when the teeth have no room to erupt from the gum and are overlapping and twisting in the mouth.

    • Your teeth are spaced too far apart

Spacing problems can be caused by various reasons. Sometimes, teeth are missing or small-sized. Gum diseases, incorrect swallowing reflex, thumb sucking can also provoke teeth movements and gaps between the front teeth.

    • You have an underbite

Underbite occurs when the lower jaw protrudes over the upper jaw, provoking the lower front teeth to overlap top front teeth.

    • You suffer from crossbite

In case of crossbite the upper tooth or a row of teeth sits inside the lower teeth, causing tooth stratification and displaced jaw growth.

    • You suffer from thumb sucking

More often this problem occurs to children. Thumb sucking can cause the pressure on the teeth and soft tissues in the mouth, creating the problems with teeth position and jaw growth. Thumb sucking can also be a reason for other dental problems in children: buck teeth, open bite, crossbite, weak chin, etc. Most children can suck their thumb without any damage until their permanent teeth appear. But, is is important to evaluate your children’s oral health by age seven to discuss possible solutions if needed.

    • You have tongue thrusting problem

Tongue thrusting occurs when the tongue moves forward during speech or swallowing, causing misalignment and overbite. Tongue thrusting is a normal behavior in childhood. But, if this habit persists when a child grows up, the professional dental treatment becomes compalsury.

Colored Braces

Colored braces are the most common type of braces. These are the metal brackets with color elastics (rubber bands) that give you a unique beautiful smile. First, all the brackets are wired together, then the adjustments are made to force the teeth change their position. We provide a wide range of colors and different color combination, allowing you to add your own personality to your braces.

Clear Braces

Clear braces, commonly known as ceramic braces, are made of translucent material. They are especially popular among adult patients due to their cosmetic appeal. Ceramic braces are the same shape and size as metal braces, but they have more natural teeth color and are less noticeable. Clear braces placement involves applying larger brackets to each tooth, although they are clear and hard to distinguish.

invisalign

Invisalign® braces are one of the newest brace types. They are usually used for patients with minor problems. Invisalign® consists of 18 to 30 customized clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every two weeks. Each next set of aligners push and shift your teeth a little bit more. Aligners are usually bonded with clear buttons that are almost invisible.

Invisalign® braces must be removed when eating or drinking (the only exception is water). Invisalign® braces are very safe: they won’t stain and damage your teeth. With Invisalign® the treatment course is often faster. Usually, Invisalign® treatment lasts from six months to two years, depending on the patient’s problem. Moreover, Invisalign® patients have less emergency visits to the dentist as there are no wires or brackets to fix. Remember that success of these braces totally depends on you wearing them no less than 20 hours a day.

Retainers

After your braces are removed, you will need to wear retainers to help your teeth stay in their new position. Retainer is needed to straighten your teeth and prevent their movement. A retainer is made of plastic and metal and is custom-made. Retainers can be used not only after braces treatment. Some people wear them to hide gaps in their teeth, to help with speech problems, etc.

At What Age Should My Child Be Evaluated for Braces?

Children should be evaluated for braces by age seven. By this age, most children have a mix of permanent and baby teeth, allowing the dentist to provide a very accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment plan for the next years. By starting treatment before your children have all permanent teeth, you may prevent a "bad bite" and jaw alignment.

Do All Baby Teeth Have to Fall Before Starting Orthodontic Treatment?

The answer is yes. It is recommended to have all baby teeth out, but in some cases baby teeth can still be there.

Does It Hurt to Have Braces?

Getting braces doesn’t hurt. Advanced dental technology, introduction of tech wires and smaller braces make the procedure as comfortable as possible. However, afterwards, braces can cause a little discomfort until you get used to them. Teeth and mouth can be sore a day after the procedure, but it is not painful. If needed, the pain can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medicines.
