When it comes to tooth brushing, you probably feel like you know what you’re doing, right? After all, you’ve been doing it at least twice a day, every day, since you were at least two years old. Brace yourselves, because what we’re about to tell you is going to blow your mind: it’s extremely likely you’re brushing your teeth all wrong! Don’t worry, though- we’re here to set you straight on the dos, don’ts and official procedure for brushing your teeth effectively for a healthy smile.

DO brush for longer than it seems necessary. Our experienced dentist recommends that the minimum amount of time you should be spending each time you brush your teeth is two minutes. It seems excessive at first- go on, try it!- but dentists agree that at least two minutes is how long it takes to effectively brush each tooth as well as your tongue and gums so plaque gets properly removed.

DON’T use the same toothbrush for too long. Do you keep your toothbrush for longer than 2 months? If so, you are not getting the results you think you’re getting by brushing. When bristles start to wear out on your toothbrush, they can’t clean teeth properly. Before anyone leaves our dentist office we tell them how important it is to change your toothbrush before the bristles start to get bent.

DO brush your tongue. It’s all well and good to brush your teeth, but what about your tongue? Food particles can build up on your tastebuds, making a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to bad breath and promote cavities. Make sure your tongue gets some toothbrush love too!

DON’T forget to floss! Lots of people skip this important step, figuring that brushing alone is enough. But flossing is necessary for removing the food particles that get stuck between your teeth. Not only that, but flossing keeps your gums healthy and less prone to periodontitis or gingivitis.

DO brush in circles. Up and down, back and forth. If that’s how you brush, you may not be getting your teeth as clean as you could. Brushing in circles ensures that the toothbrush will be able to go deeper between teeth and get al over the surface of each tooth, rather than just the fronts of each one.

Your tooth brushing regimen can help prevent against cavities, gum disease and tooth loss, but it is only one component of maintaining a healthy smile. Don’t forget to schedule regular dental exams and cleanings. If you reside in or around Santa Clarita and are looking for a caring, experienced dentist, call Aesthetic Dental today.
